Similar Genre Research

This Video is Blood Red Shoes- Light it up, I used this not only because it is of a similar genre as my chosen song but also because the video setting and visual style is similar to how I want my final product. The forest setting is rather tranquil in winter, however I want mine to have a more colourful and autumnal feel too it. Mine will feature rain and streams rather than the more barren scene of winter. I also like the costumes within the film, the band look rather edgy and cool, whereas the actors look rough and rugged by the terrain.
I love this video, for The Maccabees- Love you better. I love the editing and lighting, certain lighting is used to signify a certain part of the song along with the use of smoke and camera effect. Also each band member seems to have their own colour also. I really like the rotoscope type effect, where glowing lines have been drawn onto each frame, this creates a stream of light type of effect. Although in practice this may not be suitable for my video as it will take a very long time to draw over every single frame.

History of Total Life Forever and Genre

Total Life Forever is the title track from Foals second album: Total Life Forever. It has not been released as single.

Leading up to the release of their second album the band released some segments of track via their myspace website. Later they played their first tracks from their new album at T in the Park 2009 including Total life forever and one other track. The album reached number 8 in the UK album chart.

Foals are greatly considered to be of the Math Rock genre. This genre shares its place of origin in the late 80’s underground music scene of the American Midwest and its surroundings with post-rock. Some early bands characteristics of both math rock and post-rock, using instruments for textures rather than melodies and riffs, featuring atypical rhythms and some dissonance. The genres soon diverged: math rock concentrated on angular melodies, atypical time signatures, start-stop rhythms, and dissonance, while staying closer to rock music in sound and instrumentation.

However others refer to Foals as being from the Indie genre, a controversial genre in itself. The meaning of the term: "indie rock" is contested by many musicians, fans and commentators. Some use the term "indie" to describe any music produced by artists working within the network of independent record labels and underground music venues that emerged in the US and elsewhere in 1980's and 1990's. Others understand indie rock as a distinct genre of rock with a specific artistic aesthetic, and care less about the context in which it is made. Many embrace both meanings of the word, believing that the aesthetics of the genre and its means of production are deeply intertwined.

Cover Analysis

The Kasabian album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum album cover features all four of the band members gazing into a mirror as they each wear very flamboiant clothing.
The idea about the cover was said to represent the band members getting ready to go to a fancy dress party at the lunatic asylum. Band member Sergio Pizzorno has said to have stated that each song of the album is said to represent one of the inmates. Perhaps each member on the cover may also represent the personality or beliefs of these "inmates."
The cover took inspiration from the album Made in Germany, by German band Amon Düül II. Which also features members of the band in eccentric and off the wall fancy dress costumes including a medievil knight and a German 19th Century Soldier.
The colours on the album cover feature a lot of red, white and blue; which reminds me of their previous album Empire and it's patriotic theme. This is also confirmed by the bands relationship with the england football team, having their songs repeatedly played throughout world cup footage. Meigan also featured in the England football shirt advertisement campaign.
The font for the band name Kasabian, is the same as the last three albums. This helps as it shows the band have not deviated from their musical roots, but also it is instantly recognisable by die-hard fans and also by anyone who has seen the logo before.

This is the magazine advertisement of the Band of Skulls single Fires. Due to the title of the single: Flames, a sculpture of fire has been made to represent this made from paper folds, plastic and foil. The photograph of this sculpture is very striking due to the depth of the image and vibrant colours on a dark background, this draws in the readers eye.
The band name can be seen across the top of the image in plain font so that the band name is easily recognisable, fires is written in the centre of image in a more cursive font to differenciate between the band name and the album title. The curve is more appropriate for a single named fire as fire is not rigid. The image is again reproduced in the centre where an image of the actual single cover can been seen. This is so that readers will recognise the cover on the shelves of stores across the country.
The official website and myspace are noted at the bottom so that people who do not know the band can easily locate them online and the advertisement informs the reader that the single is currently out for purchase on both 7" and download also. This is important as it tells old fashioned readers can buy the single on vinyle, so that they can play it on their record play but also newer listeners who use computing that they can simply download it straight to their computers. This is useful in a world where technology is constantly changing and improving.
